Holistic Practitioner Spotlight with Danelle Aliseo, a Nurse Practitioner, Who Helps Patients Get Reversal of GI Symptoms

We are speaking with Danelle Aliseo, a Board Certified Holistic Nurse Practitioner, on the topic of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and her approach to helping her patients stop all medications and get back in control of their lives.

Tell Us a Story About a Patient Suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and How You Helped

Robert came to me with complaints of intense abdominal cramping, diarrhea and bloating. His suffering caused him to miss many days of work as well as social and family events.

What had the patient tried before seeking you out?

Robert had seen several gastrointestinal doctors throughout New York State. The many medications prescribed for him were aimed solely at subsiding his symptoms of gas , bloating , cramping and diarrhea. None of these medications had made a difference for the better. In fact, the added side effects compounded his condition. Robert sought the help of medical marijuana which did help to numb some of the pain. The problem for him was that it left him feeling lethargic and unproductive.

How did you arrive at your course of treatment?

To understand what were potential influencing factors in Robert’s reported symptoms, I sat down with him and went over a detailed history. This included learning about his dietary habits, food cravings, bowel movements, sleep patterns, stress levels, energy levels, and emotional traumas.

I next ordered laboratory testing of blood and stools. Blood analysis included basic blood panels, independent thyroid and adrenal panels, inflammatory markers, vitamin and mineral levels, hormones and heavy metals.

A stool analysis provides an in-depth report of the gut microbiome. This gives us a full break down of normal flora, opportunistic bacteria, parasitic infection, digestive enzymes , inflammation and intestinal permeability markers.

We found that parasites were present.

What modalities or therapies did you implement and what was the outcome of the services you provided?

The first thing was to implement a course of anti-parasitic medications. I also included healing herbs and supplements for deficient nutrients. Robert also needed some dietary changes which included removal of sugar, processed foods, gluten , grains and dairy. We removed these foods because of their potential impact of the gut lining and risk for intestinal permeability.

The next phases of Robert’s treatment plan were aimed at:

  • Opening detox pathways by improving bile flow through the liver
  • Removal of the parasitic infection – we included the use of enemas and colonics – crucial during parasite protocols to ensure removal of organisms and prevent detox reactions.
  • Repair of the gut which included stress management in order to bring the patient into a parasympathetic healing state. This entailed deep breathing exercises and sound therapy.

Over several months, this overall plan led to a complete reversal of Robert’s GI symptoms, allowing him to stop use of all medications and medical marijuana and return to his work full time, free of pain and anxiety.

Why and When Did You Choose the Holistic Path?

I chose the holistic path because from a young age I have always wanted to be a healer.

I spent 3 years working in a hospital based setting as a nurse, recognizing how western medicine failed to address so many key factors in a person’s well being and how conventional medicine only masked symptoms of disease. There was no focus on the impact that diet , lifestyle and emotional state had on a person’s well being.

I became passionate about using a whole systems approach to resolve chronic illness by correcting underlying dysfunctions. I recognized how each person needs to be approached uniquely in order to set a person up for a successful recovery.

In addition, like many others, I had my own health journey where I found myself hitting a wall in conventional medicine. I was experienced fatigue, anxiety , dizziness and loss of menstruation . After seeing many physicians who only looked to prescribe me medication, I began to dig deeper into what the root cause of my symptoms could be. I began to change my dietary habits and other lifestyle factors and deal with stress in my life. When I began to see the major shift in my overall health from these changes, I became determined to return to school to become a holistic Nurse Practitioner in order to have a greater impact on the lives of many individuals seeking true wellness.

What Lessons Have Your Work and Personal Experiences Taught You?

Through my work I recognized the importance of approaching each person as an individual in a completely unique way. Treatments need to be tailored to the person because of how each person can respond differently to treatment plans based on their genetics and especially their ability to detox.

I have learned that environmental toxicity has a bigger impact then most individuals realize. Endocrine disruption happens as a direct result of toxins we are exposed to daily. The most fundamental part of medicine should include the implementation of daily detox in order to reduce the risk of developing most chronic illness.

When approaching illness consider all potential triggers such as foods, hidden infections ( bacteria or viral ), gut health, hormones, toxins and stress management. I have learned the immense impact emotional trauma can have on all systems of the body especially if left unsolved.
