Holistic Practitioner Spotlight with Wellness Coach, Stacey B. Shapiro
We are speaking with Stacey Shapiro, MSW, HWP, MLC on how she helped a young adult who struggled with anger.
Tell Us a Story About a Client Whose Chronic Anger Finally Lifted.
Heidi is a young adult who has struggled with anger, particularly with her family who frequently spoke to her with biting sarcasm and would often criticize her for every little thing. Her family members did not communicate about their feelings and so, Heidi felt no resolution within her when anger was triggered on a daily basis. Since she needed to deal with it on her own and not having the tools to ease her inner distress, Heidi’s anger regularly created angst, eating at her and sticking around for hours at a time.
What had the client tried before seeking you out?
Heidi previously had been to a therapist and tried medication which did little to change her reactions and alleviate her feelings of anger. She had never tried a holistic approach or coaching and thought she had nothing to lose.
What is your course of treatment?
We started with Cognitive Behavioral techniques or re-framing thought processes, but this was not helping Heidi. Mindfulness meditation was tried as well but the sensation of anger was still overcoming her when back in her situation.
I have seen many clients resolve strong emotions through Comprehensive Energy Psychology techniques. This technique uses various meridian points that acupuncturists use to resolve emotional issues. It also incorporates clearing subconscious blocks and assessing energy through muscle testing.
I taught Heidi about her energy systems and how to make sure the flow of energy was functioning the way it should, a technique that Heidi could implement at home. What I love about this technique is how quickly and effectively this modality works.
Length of time for coaching depends on whether the client implements the strategies given in between sessions. Consistency is key. Because I know Comprehensive Energy Psychology techniques work so well, we implemented these modalities for Heidi. In the beginning of coaching Heidi came in weekly until her anger started to resolve and then she came in bi-weekly. By the sixth session she tended to much less anger. Our sessions allowed Heidi to talk to her parents about her anger which helped resolve some of her resentment.
Once her anger was significantly lowered, she came in once a month for a couple of months. At the end of her sessions, she was able to come home without any feelings of anger inside. Heidi’s total coaching time was over a six-month period.
Why and When Did You Choose the Holistic Path?
I started learning about holistic modalities during my years of practice. I took notice that many of the conventional modalities for dealing with emotions did not address the client’s bodily responses to these emotional triggers making it difficult for them to implement the cognitive interventions.
I found that holistic modalities would achieve positive results in much less time. Time after time I would see that when the body sensations first were addressed and cleared, the client felt less reactive, enabling other interventions to be implemented more easily.
What Lessons Have Your Work and Personal Experiences Taught You?
I’ve been studying and using holistic practices personally for 15 years. On an almost daily basis I practice holistic self-care on all levels of my being, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and energetically. It has changed me because I know how important our energy system is in the healing process now.
For the past 10 years, I found that incorporating these disciplines into my private practice has changed the way I conduct coaching, allowing my clients to experience positive results in a shorter period of time.
