Holistic Practitioner Spotlight with Honnesh Kamaria, Certified Yoga and Fitness Instructor

We are speaking with Honnesh Kamaria, a Yoga Holistic Fitness Professional, on how individualized programs that include Yoga can better help clients work towards their health and weight goals.

Tell Us How a Fitness and Diet Plan that Combines Yoga Helps Middle Aged Women to Better Achieve Desired Weight and Health

I live and practice in India where the majority of my clients are middle-aged women with underlying health conditions whose main concern is not being able to achieve their desired weight loss with conventional means. Let’s take one of my client’s journey as an example,

Radhika is a 48 year old housewife diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and onset of osteoporosis. She had a history of high blood pressure and her blood test revealed elevated LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein). Her symptoms included an increase in weight, tiredness, and pain in joints. Her life was affected with difficulties with ADL (Activity of Daily Life), lack of confidence and motivation.

Radhika had regular visits to her physician where she was prescribed oral medications. She had also tried general fitness training in a Gym set-up. Experiencing insufficient improvement, she sought alternatives.

Explain your process

Information is crucial in figuring out a plan of action. We discussed Radhika’s health goals and her personal and family health history. She disclosed that she at times experienced radiating chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, and at times nausea and giddiness. Her close family members had a history of heart attack, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

My assessment included her current weight, BP, pulse, body composition, fitness and movement, and the diet she followed.

Finally, after reviewing all the necessary information above and doing physical tests, I was able to make an overall fitness plan based on Radhika’s goals that included a modified daily schedule. This included Yoga, Cardio,  light resistant weights, and changes to her diet.

What modalities were used and what was the outcome?

I created a program tailored to Radhika’s goals and abilities. This included:

  • A mixed regime of Yoga – Power, Hatha, and  graceful Vinyasa flow
  • Cardio – burning a target amount of calories doing her favorite activity using dynamic movements
  • Light Resistant Weights
  • Change of Diet
    • Analyzed one week of her daily diet through a form
    • Made modifications to make it Calorie Deficit in order to fulfill her weight-loss and strength-gaining goal.

The outcome was noticeable improvement in her ADLs and her intrinsic motivation. Although she is still getting used to the modified diet, the body shape and strength keep Radhika on the healthier path forward.

Why and When Did You Choose the Holistic Path?

From the very beginning, I always considered fitness to be a broader spectrum than just going to the gym. Once I started exercising at the age of 13, I started learning about the concept of fitness in more detail. After I took my 1st yoga class at the age of 14, my true journey with holistic fitness actually began.

Living in an Ashram for 3 months learning, eating and living a Satvik life (the quality of nature that brings about balance, peace, purity and clarity), I realized Fitness and Yoga both have their individual benefits. Knowing this, I decided I wanted to to train other people in yoga and fitness. Soon my interest rooted deeper into eating habits, living habits and even daily routines. I realized I loved having a balanced and healthy lifestyle and wanted to incorporate it in my work. This is when I started practicing and incorporating Holistic teaching and training into my journey.

What Lessons Have Your Work and Personal Experiences Taught You?

I’ve realized that knowledge is endless and I have to keep upgrading my knowledge on Holistic Fitness and things I love. At the same time, staying in touch with our community, helping people and giving an individual a reason to love the holistic life is of extreme importance to me.

Being a holistic practitioner, I understand the need for balance and can help people incorporate it with yoga, fitness and healthy living and eating. I feel responsible to share my knowledge on the marvelous benefits that holistic living has. Each individual looks and practices it in a different way and I help them find their way.

Biography

A 13-year-old with an insane interest for fitness, I taught myself everything I could about it. On a dare, I took a Yoga class at the age of 14 and loved it. At age 16 I became a certified Yoga instructor .

I teach yoga from an intuitive and highly developed understanding of the human body and psyche. Students practice asana – breath and an awareness of the movement of energy through the body. With meticulous guidance, my students cultivate an acute awareness of their own practice and life process, resulting in an exhilarating journey into self-discovery, cleansing and healing.

In teaching Yoga, I am doing my part to mend the hope of the people – to inspire people to clear through the stuff that hardens them and sickens their bodies so they can walk freely and lightly in a healing way, in a beautiful way. For me, this is my intent.

Branching out into the Holistic Lifestyle, I started gaining more knowledge in terms of fitness. I acquired knowledge on all aspects of health required. Like, CPR-AED, Diet and Nutrition, Fitness Training, Hormones and Testosterones, Parkinson’s Disease, Weight Control Management, FIFA – Football Medicine, Coaching, Covid-19 Precautions and Safety for Gym and Wellness.
