Toxic Body-8 Tips for Safe Detoxification

Truck Spraying Poison

Something Has Changed

As children, we never considered toxic exposures as a problem. We lived in houses and went to schools that had lead paint and asbestos. We broke thermometers and played with the mercury.  There was only leaded gasoline and we burned piles of leaves every autumn, a smell I still miss. Our mothers stored our clothing in moth balls and we ran behind the trucks in the heat of the summer to feel the cool mosquito spray. And everybody smoked tobacco. Yet, as a child, I can’t remember many people who had heart disease, diabetes, or cancer. There was no such thing as fast food, synthetic fabrics, or plastic containers. School nurses only gave out Band-Aids. Also unheard of were peanut allergies, autism, or Alzheimer’s disease. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome didn’t exist nor did Fibromyalgia or Autoimmune diseases. Something has changed. Could it be that the steady and massive increase in toxic exposures over the last 60-some years have built up to a chronic disease producing tipping point?

Today, Toxic Exposures are Everywhere

Plastic is so pervasive that it’s impossible to imagine the world without it. Not only have containers changed from glass to plastic or wax paper to plastic wrap, but food has little resemblance to what Baby Boomers and their predecessors grew up on. If you can remember how a Jersey beefsteak tomato, a banana, or fresh-picked corn on the cob once tasted, you know what I’m referring to.

Pesticide SprayingPopulation growth has demanded higher yield crops which have taken consumers down a toxic road of imbibing pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified plants. We are exposed to toxic chemicals in our water, air, medications, furniture, clothing, building materials, cleaning supplies, and personal care items. But, while modern medicine has taken incredible strides to extend the lives of the pre-World War II (and pre-toxic food) generation, chronic diseases have escalated each year and insidiously crept into the younger age groups, diminishing not just their longevity but their quality of life.

Your Body is One Big Filter for Toxic Substances

Well, the first thing that must happen is awareness. In this case, ignorance is not bliss. You need to wake up to the fact that we live in a toxic world and to the best of your ability you must stop the fountain.  What does that mean? Simply put, you must become educated about what you are putting in and on your body. Read and understand labels so you can put the brakes on incoming toxins. While that’s a crucial first step, it doesn’t mean that you are out of the woods. Now it’s time to take out the trash.

Building up over time, toxic substances have found their way into your cells where they hide and cause destruction. These poisons can cause your cells to malfunction or die. And because the toxins change their chemical nature and become locked in cells, levels of the toxic material generally will not show up in blood or urine tests.

Generally, the body can rid itself of toxic substances. Waste products are continually being eliminated through our urine, feces, sweat, breath and hair. But a toxic overload can severely burden the organs of elimination – namely the colon, liver, kidney, lungs, and skin. With the inability to purge the system, excessive amounts of poisons back up into the body and can deposit in nerve tissue, fat cells, endocrine glands, lymphatics, and any organ. This is when health is impaired. But if you first get your mind and body primed, you can, over time, safely detoxify.

8 Things You Can Do to Get in the Flow of Safely Ridding Your Body of Toxic Materials

In the Flow

  1. Drink copious amounts of water. Get in the habit of drinking filtered purified water which is essential to wash away the toxic waste. Two glasses of water first thing is the morning is the best medicine. I add an ounce of aloe vera juice and the juice of a half of lemon. Drink water throughout the day – at least 8 glasses. Do this can prevent the poisons from recirculating and redistributing which could increase symptoms of toxicity. Unsweetened caffeine-free teas are OK. Stay away from soft drinks, fruit juices (unless diluted), coffee, and alcohol. The sugar (and sugar substitutes), caffeine (even decaffeinated), and alcohol strain the hormonal system.
  2. Get 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep. Sleep is so important in the repair and mobilization of cellular toxic wastes. Not getting enough restful sleep impairs your ability to restore your cells and weakens your immune system. Sleep in a darkened room with temperatures on the cooler side. Avoid eating after 8:00 PM. Keep mobile devices in another room, shut down WIFI, and use a battery alarm clock instead of an LED clock near your head.
  3. Evaluate your gut. You should thank God every day for your holes in your body. Without the ability to get rid of wastes, you would die. All organs of elimination should be well functioning in order for a detox to be effective. The entire gut is so important, not only for eliminating toxic wastes, but also for having a major role in your immune system. You should be having 1-3 bowel movements a day. No constipation or diarrhea. First drink plenty of water. Add fiber to your diet. Chew your food thoroughly before you put more in your mouth. Supplement with probiotics, kefir, yogurt, and fermented vegetables. Take digestive enzymes with meals. Choose non-GMO, organic food that has not been sprayed with pesticides.
  4. Protect your liver. Your liver works hard to detoxify your blood. Everything you eat, absorb through your skin, and breathe in eventually gets into the bloodstream and is then filtered by the liver. This is a major organ of detoxification that can become congested and damaged from toxins. Reduce intake of alcohol. Work with your health care providers to cut back on medications if possible. Supplement with milk thistle.
  5. Take care of infections. Infections can hinder detoxification because they divert a lot of energy needed by the cells and organs of elimination. Infections can be anywhere in or on the body. But often neglected are oral infections. Pockets of germs in the gums, teeth and bone use up a lot of the body’s immune resources. In addition, toxic waste products produced by these organisms can be picked up by the lymphatic system and carried throughout the body. These toxins can have devastating effects on cellular metabolism and energy production. Fatigue, allergies and susceptibility to chronic illness can be a consequence. Eliminate sugar in all forms. Drink water and herbal teas. Get enough restful sleep. Supplement with vitamin C. Eat raw garlic.
  6. Don’t go on a weight loss diet. Not all body fat is bad. Fat cells can actually be beneficial since they attract and store vast amounts of poisonous chemicals. Too rapid weight loss from dieting can result in toxins being released from its stores in fat cells which can then cause flu-like symptoms, fatigue and headaches. The toxins recirculate and deposit into already stressed organs such as the liver, kidneys, and GI tract and can result in permanent damage, disabling them from eliminating toxic wastes. Cut down on portion size and avoid a crash or trendy diet.
  7. Be optimistic. If you think negative thoughts, then you will never get better. Your thoughts have everything to do with the happiness of your cells that make up your body. Think of what happens when you are nervous. You may feel nauseous. A stressful situation may give you a headache. Excitement gives you energy. A smiling baby warms your heart. Take a walk outside and get out of your head. Get sunlight. Watch funny movies. Smile often.
  8. Plan your detoxification course. You can read volumes on detoxification. It takes at least a week of planning. Decide whether you want to go on this journey alone, with a partner, or with professional guidance and monitoring. Liver, kidney, and bowel flushes, saunas, and juicing are a few detox methods. Professionals can prescribe chelating agents, herbs, homeopathics and other remedies for deeper cleansing of organs and other body tissues.

Ridding the body of toxic substances is an on-going process and should never be done too quickly or aggressively. Being mercury toxic, I’ve been detoxifying for over 25 years. Every day I do something to build my immune system, keep my organs of elimination flowing, and practice mindfulness and gratitude. We all want to live a long and healthy life. Like anything we want to accomplish well, it takes practice and perseverance. I wish you well.
