Having dissimilar metals in the mouth (e.g.-mercury-containing amalgam combined with gold, crown metal alloys, stainless steel, orthodontic brackets and wires, partial denture frameworks, and titanium implants) causes galvanic action – electrical currents where mercury vapor can be released into saliva and enters oral tissues. Measuring the oral currents allows defining the currents’ intensity.
