Chronic Nerve Pain Relief With Scrambler Therapy

Holistic Practitioner Spotlight with Dr. Michael Cooney, Doctor of Chiropractic

We are speaking with Dr. Michael Cooney, DC who specializes in chronic nerve pain management using a specific non-invasive holistic technique, called Calmare Scrambler Therapy.

Tell Us a Story About  a Patient with Chronic Nerve Pain and How You Helped

Austin, age 18, from Arizona, presented with severe and chronic nerve pain in his right foot following a broken fibula. He was using a cane to maintain mobility. There was damage to the peroneal nerve (a branch of the sciatic nerve), which rapidly developed into Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), also referred to as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, an intensely painful condition with no known cure. He also experienced persistent and spreading painful lesions on top of his right foot, a common CRPS side effect.

His prior pain management efforts included nerve blocks, stem cell transplants, physical therapy, hyperbaric oxygen and a multitude of powerful prescription pain medications, including opioids.

The Calmare Scrambler Therapy for Chronic Nerve Pain

Austin agreed to a treatment for his chronic nerve pain using Calmare MC-5A, an FDA-cleared 510(k)-cleared and European CE mark-certified device. I assured him that it was pain-free, non-invasive, drug-free and there were no side effects.

How it works is that the device creates a low energy electrical impulse that travels through the patient’s nerves delivering a “no-pain” signal to the brain. This process “tricks” the brain that the area of pain is normal and eventually results in prolonged pain relief.

Following the 10 days of scrambler therapy treatment, Austin left our clinic pain-free and cane-free. His blisters had diminished by more than 50 percent, in a 2-week time span. Now, after almost a year and a half, Austin’s mother recently contacted us to report that he continues to be pain-free.

Why and When Did You Choose the Holistic Path?

Having been injured in my early twenties, I was saved from surgery by the skill of a chiropractor. From that experience, I knew I had found my career path in holistic medicine. As the years passed, some of my patients still experienced chronic pain, even after traditional and alternative medicinal practices had been utilized.

I was tremendously bothered by the fact that these patients had reached the end of the neuropathic pain journey—but still lived with chronic nerve pain. I was determined to find a newer, non-invasive, pill-free solution to help people with medication-and treatment-resistant chronic nerve pain.

After an exhaustive search, I discovered Calmare scrambler therapy in Italy and quickly underwent training to use the device.

Many professionals my age would be preparing to retire, but I am so inspired by the potential of this device, and successfully treating over 1,000 patients since 2010, I am committed to helping as many people in pain as I can.

What Lessons Have Your Work and Personal Experiences Taught You?

The most important lesson I have learned in the clinical treatment of pain is that you must start treating patients with the least invasive therapy.

The medical model is to attack the symptom.

It is imperative to address the original source of the presentation (pain condition) before any long-term or sustained benefit can be optimally achieved.

What Would You Like Your Patients to Know About Your Services that They May Not be Aware of?

In this era of failed opioid pain relief and difficulty obtaining medication for chronic pain, people in pain are increasingly seeking drug-free options to lessen pain.

If you have medication- and/or treatment-resistant chronic nerve pain, Scrambler Therapy is a non-invasive, side-effect-free pain management solution that may reduce or eliminate your pain and associated side effects.

“Nine years since first introducing Calmare scrambler therapy, I have never felt more assured that this treatment can dramatically elevate the quality of life for people living with chronic nerve pain,” says Dr. Cooney.
